An exciting and spectacular encounter in the depths: a school of squid was spotted this morning, Saturday, in the Gulf of Eilat, swimming right among the visitors diving at the site.
The divers, who arrived at the gulf with the goal of seeing unique fish, were treated to an extraordinary surprise, which was documented up close by one of the participants.
The squid has an elongated, cylindrical body, large prominent eyes, and triangular fins on the sides of its rear. It is capable of moving rapidly by sucking in water and expelling it with force as a jet, and is renowned for its impressive ability to change body color for camouflage.
The most prominent and common species in our region is the European squid (Loligo vulgaris). These creatures are active mainly at night and live in schools above sandy bottoms or at depth. Despite their extensive ecological presence and their status in commercial fishing, watching them swim freely during a regular dive is considered relatively rare, as they are particularly cautious and fast.
