Maccabi Tel Aviv Close to Moving EuroLeague Home Games to Cyprus
Reports in Cyprus indicate Maccabi Tel Aviv is close to moving its EuroLeague home games to the island. Following talks with the Cypriot president, the club sent an official request to host matches in Limassol or Nicosia.
According to reports in Cyprus, Maccabi Tel Aviv is very close to finalizing an agreement to host its EuroLeague home games on the neighboring island. CyprusBasket reported on Monday that negotiations accelerated during the preseason tournament in which the team participated about a week and a half ago in Cyprus.
"The strongman of Maccabi Tel Aviv, Shimon Mizrahi, had the opportunity to meet and speak with the country's president, Nikos Christodoulides. During the meeting, serious interest was expressed by the Israeli club to use Cyprus as its home court for EuroLeague home games," the report stated.
According to the report, Maccabi Tel Aviv has already taken the next step and sent an official letter to the president, officially declaring its desire to hold its matches in Cyprus within the top European competition. CyprusBasket noted that "the request was received positively by the Cypriot side and there is now a very high probability—almost certain—that Maccabi will host its EuroLeague home games in Cyprus."
What has not yet been clarified is the arena that will host the games. Two options are currently on the table: the Spyros Kyprianou Arena in Limassol and the Tassos Papadopoulos - Eleftheria Arena in Nicosia.
Since the outbreak of the October 7 war, Maccabi Tel Aviv has been hosting its EuroLeague home games in Belgrade. If and when the matter becomes official, this will be excellent news for Maccabi Tel Aviv fans, who will be able to make a short trip to the neighboring island to support their team.
