The Ministry of Health reported Wednesday that a medium-sized mixed-breed dog with light brown fur has tested positive for rabies at Kibbutz Maagan Michael, located within the Hof HaCarmel Regional Council. According to official data, 13 individuals who came into contact with the infected animal have been referred for urgent preventive rabies treatment.
Urgent Appeal to the Public
Health authorities urge anyone who had direct contact—or whose pets may have interacted with the infected dog between October 11, 2026, and October 26, 2026—to contact the Hadera Health Bureau or their nearest local health office immediately to evaluate the need for post-exposure prophylaxis. Outside of standard working hours and during weekends, citizens are advised to visit a hospital emergency room.
Parents have been specifically instructed to question their children regarding any potential encounters with the dog or stray animals in the area during the specified timeframe. Residents are also requested to share this crucial information with visitors and neighbors who spent time in the region.
Prevention and Safety Guidelines
-
Immediate washing: Anyone bitten or scratched by an animal must immediately wash the affected area with running water and soap for 10 to 15 minutes, apply antiseptic, and visit a health bureau promptly.
-
Clinical risk: Rabies is a fatal viral disease attacking the central nervous system of mammals, with a nearly 100 percent mortality rate once symptoms appear.
-
Transmission vectors: The virus spreads through direct contact with saliva or nerve tissue via bites, scratches, or contact with broken skin and mucous membranes.
Pet owners whose animals may have been exposed to the rabid dog are directed to consult a municipal veterinarian immediately for professional guidance.
