European Union to Vote on Approving Tesla FSD Systems
The European Union is set to vote on the approval of Tesla's FSD systems, a move that would pave the way for their deployment in Israel. Taxation issues regarding the technology remain unresolved.
While Minister of Transport Miri Regev promises Tesla car owners that FSD systems (the manufacturer's advanced semi-autonomous driving systems) will be activated in Israel, the European Union is also working toward their approval. Once approved by the EU, the systems will technically be permitted in Israel, which operates according to European regulations. However, a check by "Calcalist" reveals that the issue of taxation on Tesla's driving systems has not yet been resolved.
According to reports in Europe, a vote is expected to take place on October 6 at Tesla's request to determine whether the FSD systems will be approved for use. This will require a majority of 15 out of the 27 EU member states.
In the US, the use of FSD systems is already regulated, but just this week a case was documented in Arizona where a Tesla car traveling in FSD mode braked and stopped on a highway, causing a pickup truck to hit it, killing its driver.
FSD systems are already undergoing a "trial by fire" in the Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium, Estonia, and Latvia as part of an experimental framework. In the case of the Netherlands, an investigation published by Reuters determined that the data presented to regulators was falsified. Regulators in the Netherlands refused to disclose their findings on the matter.
In preparation for the approval procedures, Tesla published preliminary data regarding the effectiveness of FSD systems in European countries where it operates. The company announced that cars equipped with them were involved in only a quarter of the number of accidents compared to Tesla cars not equipped with them. According to the manufacturer, the findings are based on over 100 million kilometers driven by Tesla owners between April and August of this year.
