Iran mocks Donald Trump's initiative: "A distraction from the US crisis that will lead to defeat"
The Iranian Foreign Minister criticized Donald Trump's announcement, calling it a "distraction from US debt and rising interest rates." He warned the US President that his threats of "economic terrorism" would lead to "another defeat" against Iran. A senior Iranian parliamentary official threatened a withdrawal from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
Tehran responded on Thursday morning to the announcement by President Donald Trump, who declared on Truth Social last night that he is launching an "unprecedented" economic operation against Iran.
"'The day of economic invasion' is a distraction from America's own crisis," stated Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
He detailed the current state of the US economy and warned: "America is burdened by unprecedented debt and rising interest costs. Doubling down on a failed policy will only bring another defeat — and hostility towards the Iranians."
Trump announced the operation, which he dubbed "D-Day" (referencing the Allied invasion of Normandy during World War II):
"No one gave the Islamic Republic a better chance for a deal than I did. Tragically for them, they did not take it. Therefore, today, I am announcing the most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country!"
The President did not specify the exact measures, but claimed: "This will be economic warfare and isolation on an unprecedented scale. Their navy will disappear, their air force will be destroyed, their military factories will be in ruins, their currency will be worthless, and their country will be hanging by a thread."
Araghchi accused the US of "economic terrorism" that threatens the global economy and sovereignty. Meanwhile, Ibrahim Razi, a member of the Iranian parliament's National Security Committee, stated that "the best response to Trump is to withdraw from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons."
According to Trump's announcement, any nation allowing economic relations with Iran—whether through financial institutions, businesses, or airports—will face severe consequences:
"Oil smuggling, exchange lines, cash transfers, currency exchanges, vessel registrations, shell companies—everything must stop now. This will be an economic D-Day, and we need all our allies to isolate and subdue the Iranian threat. These madmen are on the verge of collapse, and these historic steps will paralyze them and their ability to inflict terror around the world. Iran will never have a nuclear weapon."
These remarks followed a statement by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent last weekend: "We are going to implement measures never before seen in Iran. It will be a combination of economic isolation that the world has never witnessed, and a continued blockade in the Strait of Hormuz that will prevent anything from entering or leaving Iran's ports."
