Exploration in a Little-Known Area of Suriname Reveals Rich Gold Deposit
An unusual gold discovery in an area that has so far been barely explored is raising expectations in Suriname. The company Founders Metals reported that in a drilling in the Maria Geralda area, a 22.5-meter-long section was found where an average concentration of 11.88 grams of gold per ton of rock was measured.

An unusual gold discovery in an area that has so far been barely explored is raising expectations in Suriname – a small country in the northeast of South America, on the Atlantic coast, between Guyana and French Guiana, and also bordering Brazil. The company Founders Metals reported that in a drilling in the Maria Geralda area, a 22.5-meter-long section was found where an average concentration of 11.88 grams of gold per ton of rock was measured – a particularly high figure in the mining industry. However, this is still in the exploration stage, so it is not yet known what the scope of the gold deposit is and whether it can be extracted commercially and profitably.
Suriname may not be one of the most well-known countries in South America, but its natural treasures play a central role in its economy. The small country is located in the northeast of the continent, and most of its territory is covered by dense tropical forests. Now, the results of drilling in the Maria Geralda area may point to another significant source of gold in the country.
To understand why the result is attracting attention, one must understand how gold concentration in rock is measured. Mining companies take samples from the ground and check how many grams of gold are in each ton of material. The higher the number, the less rock usually needs to be mined and processed to produce the same amount of gold. For comparison, according to published data, in open-pit gold mines around the world, the average concentration rarely exceeds 2 grams per ton.
The width of the area where the gold was found is also significant. In the Antino area, narrower gold veins are usually found. If further drilling shows that the wide and gold-rich area continues underground, this could facilitate the mining process in the future.
Even before the unusual result, the search teams identified signs of gold over an area of about 400 by 500 meters. According to structural geologist Vincent Combes, the geological structure of Maria Geralda is unusual because several geological systems that may help form gold concentrations meet in the same area. Founders Metals President Colin Padget said: "This 22.5-meter section, with a concentration of 11.88 grams per ton, represents the most significant high-grade mineralization we have encountered so far."
A high result in a specific drill hole does not mean that the entire area contains gold in the same amount. To understand how much gold is underground, the company plans to continue drilling north and south of the point where the result was obtained. The samples are transported by helicopter to a laboratory in Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname.
Such a discovery is especially important for Suriname due to the country's economy's great dependence on natural resources. The mining industry is responsible for about 60% of Suriname's GDP, and when the oil industry is added, the two sectors together account for almost 90% of the country's export revenues. The discovery of a large gold deposit could create jobs, bring royalties to the state, and lead to infrastructure investments in remote areas.
The economic potential also comes with a significant challenge: large parts of Suriname are covered by dense tropical forest, and precipitation can exceed 4,000 millimeters per year. Operating a mine in such conditions requires the construction of roads, power lines, and worker camps capable of dealing with heavy rain. Added to this are environmental questions and the need for transparent consultation with local communities, such as those in Tapanahoni and Lawa. Founders Metals has committed to operating in accordance with Suriname's responsible mining framework, which was adopted in 2022.
At this stage, it is important to distinguish between a promising drill hole and a proven gold deposit. If it turns out to be a large and continuous deposit, the discovery could have a particularly broad economic significance for Suriname. On the other hand, if it turns out that the unusual concentration is limited to a small area, the impact will be much more limited.
