Europe records historic high in drowning deaths

German media reported on Thursday that more than 100 people drowned in German waters in June alone — the highest figure in over 20 years. In total, at least 261 people have lost their lives in the first seven months of 2026, an increase of 15 compared to the same period last year.

About 90% of fatal drowning accidents occurred in open inland water sources where rescue services are typically not present, such as lakes, river pools, streams, and canals. Officials noted that large inland water bodies, including the Rhine River and Lake Constance, are considered particularly dangerous due to the high number of visitors.

Young men are particularly affected

There has been a significant increase in drowning deaths among young people aged 11 to 30. According to German media, there were 75 deaths this year compared to 49 during the same period last year, with 95% of these young victims being male. Across all age groups, 85% of the deceased were men.

The German Life Saving Association is calling for increased investment in swimming pools and school swimming lessons. A senior official within the organization warned that most children still finish elementary school without a swimming certificate, which serves as proof of a child's ability to manage and swim without assistance.
