A climate study warns: In a high-emissions scenario, the European area affected annually by fires will jump by 193% and reach about 53,000 square kilometers. Researchers claim that climate change will bring massive fires to areas that have not dealt with them in the past.

Scientists warn that the area destroyed by massive fires in Europe will almost triple by the year 2100, in a particularly worrying forecast for the continent's future.
According to a model-based climate study, climate change, which is making Europe hotter and drier, will lead to fires becoming much more frequent and widespread. In a high-emissions scenario, where the world's countries do not take significant steps to reduce air pollution, the global temperature could jump by 3.6 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial average.
Computer simulations predict that this scenario will lead to an alarming 193% increase in the European area affected by fires annually, reaching about 53,000 square kilometers of scorched earth.
This dangerous increase will not remain limited to the familiar regions in the south of the continent; it is expected to spread throughout Western and Central Europe, alongside the Mediterranean region, where an unprecedented fire season is already raging.
Researchers warn that human-caused climate change will cause massive fires to ignite even in parts of Europe that have never suffered from such blazes in the past. Dr. Kirsten Thonicke from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research emphasizes that the recent fires in France, Spain, and Greece prove how much hot, dry, and windy weather conditions are capable of quickly stretching the limits of firefighters' capabilities. There is a heavy fear that extreme climate conditions will place a hard limit on the human ability to prevent and contain fires once they reach certain dimensions.
The situation is so severe that researchers found the area affected by fires will increase significantly even if we act immediately to reduce emissions. In a low-emissions scenario, where we manage to limit warming to only 1.8 degrees Celsius, the burned area in Europe will still increase by 39% annually by the end of the current century.
Professor Thomas Hickler explains that this phenomenon stems from "warming in the pipeline" – the fact that the climate system reacts very slowly, when most of the excess heat is absorbed by the oceans and it takes a long time until the entire system reaches a new equilibrium.
In addition, humanity has already ignited positive feedback processes, such as the thawing of permafrost, which releases additional carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and accelerates the destructive process. Professor Hickler states that almost all the increase in fires in recent decades, and thus all future increases, is directly attributed to humanity's greenhouse gas emissions.
This reality is already hitting Europe with unprecedented force, as the current fire season is breaking records. Across the European Union, about 6,060 square kilometers of land have already burned – a figure two and a half times higher than the average of the last 20 years for this time of year.
Countries like Greece, France, Spain, Portugal, Croatia, and Belgium are dealing with severe fire waves that have forced thousands of people to flee their homes. In Belgium, a fire in the High Fens nature park hit a historical peak and passed the previous record from 2011.
In Greece and France, hundreds of vacationers and residents were evacuated from beaches and villages, while the UK is experiencing the worst fire season in its history with over 1,132 documented blazes. Although significant and sustained improvement in fire management can reduce future damage dramatically, scientists warn against excessive optimism; if fires become too extreme, the human ability to contain them could collapse completely, and no one knows yet exactly where this breaking point lies.
