USA Removed Syria from the List of State Sponsors of Terrorism
The move, announced earlier this year and subject to Congressional review, is being implemented tonight. This follows Donald Trump resharing a post by the Syrian Foreign Minister, who thanked the American President and his administration for the decision.
The US Department of State removed Syria tonight (Monday) from the list of state sponsors of terrorism, according to a statement from the US Department of the Treasury. This move was first announced earlier this year and was subject to review by Congress.
Earlier today, Donald Trump reshared a post by the Syrian Foreign Minister on the Truth social network, in which he is seen alongside Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara. In the post, the Syrian minister welcomed the removal of the classification and thanked the American administration for the decision.
"Under the direction of His Excellency President Ahmad al-Shara, we have closed a dark chapter in Syria's history by removing the classification imposed on it due to the policies of the ousted regime since 1979," he wrote.
He further added: "All thanks and appreciation to the United States, under the leadership of President Donald Trump, for this decision; and to my friend, Secretary of State Marco Rubio; and to the dear Ambassador Tom Barrack; and to everyone who stood by Syria."
