For passengers on a domestic Porter Airlines flight last Thursday from Victoria International Airport to Toronto, everything was going as planned. Everyone was already on board, and the aircraft was scheduled to depart within minutes. However, a minor incident escalated, leading to the cancellation of the entire flight.
A child traveling with a parent refused to buckle their seatbelt, and according to the airline, the crew's efforts to secure the passenger were unsuccessful. After several minutes of attempted persuasion, the company determined that the child created an unsafe situation for takeoff. The plane was forced to return to the gate where passengers had boarded an hour earlier so the child and parent could disembark and retrieve their luggage.
According to the British Sky News, all passengers were required to deplane to clear security protocols for a potential re-departure. However, because the crew could not prepare for takeoff before the airport's 00:30 runway curfew, the flight was ultimately canceled, leaving passengers stranded in Victoria overnight.
The airline apologized and scheduled a new flight for the following day. "There is a lot of frustration," one passenger told the Canadian channel CBC. Another passenger complained: "It took them an eternity to get off the plane. Communication with the airline was not good after the incident." Many passengers, who struggled to find last-minute accommodation, have demanded compensation from the airline for their unexpected expenses.
