Ministers demand change to rules of engagement, IDF representative responds
During a government meeting amid West Bank escalation, ministers called for stricter rules of engagement. Ben Gvir insisted on a return to targeted killings.
Against the backdrop of the escalation in the West Bank, which included three terror attacks since last Thursday, the government discussed today (Sunday) measures to eradicate Palestinian terror and called on the IDF representative to change the rules of engagement.
Minister of Defense Israel Katz: 'The IDF is operating on the ground. We conducted operations in the refugee camps, and we will likely need to do more. The IDF is scouring the area, making arrests, and acting with determination.'
Minister Yoav Kisch: 'We must change the rules of engagement.'
Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir: 'We must return to targeted killings, change the rules of engagement, and allow IDF soldiers to open fire in such incidents.'
Brigadier General Yogev Bar-Sheshet (Deputy Defense Establishment Comptroller): 'There is a difficulty in incidents where there is an intermingling of terrorists and civilians. During such clashes, the soldiers do not always know who is a terrorist and who is a civilian.'
Minister Nir Barkat replied: 'It is possible to distinguish. First, you shoot in the air, and then at the legs.'
Minister Ze'ev Elkin: 'There must be a severe response.'
Deputy Minister Almog Cohen: 'A disproportionate response is required.'
Minister Amichai Chikli: 'The Central Command Chief must change the rules of engagement.'
