Is Elon Musk's empire in danger? The report that is stirring the market
Tesla may take an extreme move of selling or separating its giant factory in China, against the backdrop of a potential merger with the billionaire's defense space company.

New reports suggest that Tesla is examining various moves regarding its operations in China, including the sale, split, or separation of its local activity. According to estimates, such a move could be part of a broader reflection by the company regarding its future structure and the relationships between the various companies owned by Elon Musk.
The report, published in the Wall Street Journal, claims that one of the possible reasons for considering the move is the desire to remove barriers that might stand in the way of a future connection between Tesla and SpaceX. The possibility of a merger between the companies raises significant regulatory questions, mainly due to the gap between the sensitive defense activity of SpaceX and the business dependence of Tesla on China.
SpaceX is currently considered one of the central defense contractors of the US government, with activity that includes launching satellites for defense entities and a satellite communication network that is also used for military needs. On the other hand, Tesla holds a significant presence in China, mainly thanks to the Gigafactory in Shanghai, which is considered one of the most important and efficient production centers of the company and produces a significant portion of Tesla vehicles worldwide.
"A significant dependence of Tesla on China could make it difficult to obtain regulatory approval for a possible merger with SpaceX, due to the fear in the US of a connection between a sensitive defense company and business activity that depends on a country that is at the center of geopolitical tension with Washington."
Elon Musk himself denied the reports and called them "absolute fake news," but certain sources noted that in the past, contingency plans were prepared in the company for the possibility of a business separation between the activity in the US and the activity in China in the event of an escalation in relations between the countries.
If Tesla does indeed consider a significant change in its activity in China, it is a move that could change the structure of the company. The Shanghai factory is considered one of the most important assets of Tesla in terms of production and profitability, and therefore a separation from the Chinese activity could indicate a change in Musk's strategic direction, with a possible emphasis on fields such as AI (artificial intelligence) and robotics.
The reports highlight the challenge facing international technology companies in the current era, in which business activity in different countries is examined not only according to economic considerations, but also according to regulatory and security considerations. For companies operating in strategic fields such as space, AI, and smart vehicles, international ties are becoming a central part of their future decisions.
