Senior officials in the Donald Trump administration have decided for the time being not to significantly expand the military campaign against Iran, The New York Times reported today, Sunday. This comes in parallel with an announcement by US Central Command (CENTCOM) that the naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz remains in effect, while summarizing the results of the blockade thus far.
According to the report, the decision was made following a discussion held by US President Donald Trump on Friday with his senior advisors and cabinet members, during which the risks associated with resuming large-scale combat operations were presented to him.
According to officials familiar with the discussions, one of the central considerations is the fear of a dangerous depletion of the inventory of Patriot interceptors and other air defense assets of the US military in the Middle East.
Alongside military considerations, senior administration officials are also concerned that expanding the fighting could lead to a broader regional war, harm Washington's allies in the Gulf, exacerbate the global energy crisis, and trigger waves of refugees.
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Kane, warned in internal conversations that while it is possible to resume a large-scale combat operation against Iran, such a move could dangerously deplete the inventory of interceptors available to Central Command.
