The mystery took an even more serious turn with the arrest of a 35-year-old local police officer, suspected of arbitrarily closing hundreds of missing persons cases and forging official records under the claim that he had made contact with the missing individuals. The affair branched out further with the arrest of a former police officer suspected of murdering his estranged wife in the city of Seogwipo on the island.
