Iranian Foreign Minister: Egypt is an important friend, beware of Israeli plots

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi tweeted this evening (Thursday) that Egypt "is considered an important friend and partner in the region, and its security is a top priority for us," following the attack on a gas tanker in Egypt. According to him, one must remain vigilant against "Israeli plots" aimed at undermining regional peace. The threat is clear, shared, and threatens Muslim solidarity.
This follows the announcement yesterday by Egypt's Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources that a fire broke out on a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) and a storage vessel docked at the port of Damietta, emphasizing that the incident is under control and that there were no casualties.
In this context, two Iranian sources told the New York Times today:
"The attack in Damietta was intended to demonstrate Iran's ability to disrupt global maritime trade."
The Egyptian Council of Ministers stated in an official announcement that the fire that broke out yesterday on two ships at the port of Damietta was caused by a drone strike. The Council's statement said:
"After control was gained over the fire that broke out on two ships at the port of Damietta on July 29, 2026, and after the competent authorities conducted an initial investigation of the incident, it became clear that it was caused by a drone. So far, no party has claimed responsibility for the incident."
The Council of Ministers further noted that the competent authorities are continuing the investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident and to take the necessary steps to safeguard Egypt's interests and its national security.
