Rehabilitation after a stroke or head injury is a lengthy process, often requiring months of intensive practice to restore a patient's movement and functional abilities. Currently, the Haifa and Western Galilee district of Clalit, in collaboration with Motion Informatics, is testing an innovative system based on augmented reality. The goal is to provide therapists with more accurate information on rehabilitation progress and to enable personalized treatment in the future. The system is currently in the evaluation and development stages as part of an effort to promote technological solutions for neurological rehabilitation in the community.

How does the technology work?

The system combines several technologies simultaneously: augmented reality glasses, functional electrical stimulation (FES), muscle activity monitoring using surface electromyography (sEMG), and real-time data analysis. During exercises, data is collected on movement quality, ranges of motion, and muscle activation patterns. This information is transmitted to the treatment team, allowing for objective tracking of the patient's performance. Clalit explains that if the technology proves effective, it may assist in personalizing rehabilitation plans and improving the understanding of the neurological recovery process.

Not yet a proven treatment

Despite the potential, Clalit emphasizes that this technology is in the clinical evaluation stage, and the purpose of the collaboration is to examine its contribution to patient care. Dr. Michael Hauser, Director of the Innovation System at Clalit's Haifa and Western Galilee district, stated:

"Medical innovation is measured by its ability to provide an answer to the clinical needs of patients and therapists. The collaboration allows us to examine how advanced digital tools can be integrated into rehabilitation processes in the community."

Tali Rappaport, Director of Occupational Therapy Services at Clalit, also emphasized that the system's clinical potential and possible contribution to rehabilitation are currently under review.

The future of neurological rehabilitation?

In recent years, technologies such as augmented reality, artificial intelligence, and biofeedback have become integral to rehabilitation research worldwide. Their goal is not to replace the therapist, but to provide more accurate data on patient performance, allow for better treatment plan adaptation, and objectively measure progress over time. If evaluation results are positive, technologies of this type may be more widely integrated into the rehabilitation system for patients recovering from strokes, head injuries, and other neurological conditions.
