The hidden danger in Chinese medical equipment: Cyber expert on preventing the threat
Concerns that Chinese devices, including medical equipment and mobile technology, are being used for data collection are a priority for cyber experts in Israel and globally. Dr. Harel Menashri, a founder of the Shin Bet's cyber array, explained on 103FM how to mitigate these risks.

Erel Segal highlighted that this threat remains largely unknown to the public and criticized state agencies for their use of Chinese technology. Dr. Menashri clarified the situation: "The Shin Bet did not issue Chinese vehicles or phones; on the contrary, for many years we have blocked the entry of Chinese-made equipment. The IDF has also recognized this threat and is removing Chinese systems from various sectors."
Dr. Menashri divided the issue into security and medical sectors. He noted that the healthcare field is particularly vulnerable due to tender policies focused on cost reduction:
"Almost all medical equipment in the country is purchased where it is cheapest, which is usually China. Any Chinese technology I know serves as a sensor for intelligence gathering. Hospitals are among the most sensitive sectors. The solution is to implement strict regulation, monitor communications, and block them, but this creates challenges for system updates."
Regarding data leaks via TikTok, Dr. Menashri noted that information is transferred intentionally. He pointed out that even the IDF Spokesperson uses the platform, as politicians are reluctant to abandon popular systems.
When asked why Israel does not restrict trade with China as the United States does, the expert explained:
"The Americans came out and said there is equipment that is forbidden to import. You should ask the politicians why we don't do the same."
In conclusion, Dr. Menashri emphasized the importance of data privacy:
"Today, much of the supply chain originates in China. Remember Joe Biden? The publication of his medical condition impacted his election run. Imagine if someone used the medical information of a person in Israel?"
