The boycott has been finally lifted: the dramatic step in Colombia-Israel relations
After years of hostile tension under the previous administration, the new president-elect announces the immediate cancellation of the coal export ban to Israel.
Colombia's president-elect, Abelardo de la Espriella, reverses his predecessor's 2024 decision and cancels the ban on coal exports to Israel. This economic and diplomatic move marks a significant stage in the rapid warming of relations between the two countries and the erasure of the previous administration's anti-Israel policy.
As we reported on Thursday, after years of tension under the rule of Gustavo Petro, his removal and the election of the pro-Israel de la Espriella have brought about a dramatic change. In a conversation held by the president-elect immediately upon taking office with Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar, it was agreed to launch a new era in diplomatic and economic relations.
As part of the agreements signed with the Colombian Foreign Minister, Omar Bula Escobar, it was decided to fully reinstate ambassadors, move the Colombian embassy to Jerusalem, and cancel the visa requirement for Israeli tourists starting September 1st.
This alliance is already evident on the ground, as a Home Front Command rescue delegation is currently operating in the country to assist with earthquake damage. The renewal of coal exports finally closes the crisis of the past and returns Colombia to the status of a close strategic partner.
