North Korea's Dramatic Breakthrough in Cyber and AI

The North Korean hacker group "Kimsuky" has built its own private artificial intelligence system, aiming to make its cyberattacks much faster, more efficient, and more dangerous, according to a report released Monday by the South Korean information security company Genians. This represents a significant escalation: the hackers are no longer using AI merely for drafting simple text messages but are integrating the technology deep into their hacking and espionage processes.

According to the report, the hackers installed AI software on their systems that operates internally and independently, without connecting to external services like ChatGPT. The primary objective of this move is to create a private digital "brain" capable of scanning and analyzing vast amounts of stolen information and documents without exposing the data or their clandestine activities to the technology companies that operate mainstream AI services.

Furthermore, researchers discovered that the hackers are utilizing artificial intelligence tools to write malicious computer code, convert voice recordings into text, and generate counterfeit financial documents and digital currencies. These documents closely mimic legitimate investment reports from well-known organizations, allowing the hackers to lure employees and trap them.

In recent years, the "Kimsuky" group has become one of the central cyber arms of the North Korean regime. According to intelligence sources in the USA and South Korea, the country's hacker units are tasked with stealing state secrets and engaging in industrial espionage, alongside the theft of funds and digital currencies to finance the regime of Kim Jong Un and its weapons programs. In 2023, official sanctions were imposed on the group by the US administration, which designated it as an official espionage arm of Pyongyang.
