Senior Appointment Promoted by Hegset Faces Senate Opposition

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegset is struggling to advance the permanent appointment of General Christopher LaNeve as Army Chief of Staff due to reservations from several Republican senators, according to a report published Wednesday in The Wall Street Journal. The administration has not yet officially submitted his candidacy for the permanent position after it became clear that there is currently not the number of votes required for its approval in the Senate Armed Services Committee.

According to US officials and congressional sources, Hegset sought to appoint LaNeve permanently to replace General Randy George, who finished his term in April. However, the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Republican Senator Roger Wicker, made it clear as early as May that the appointment does not have sufficient support within the committee.

Republicans hold a narrow majority of 14 to 13 in the committee, so in order to move the appointment to a vote in the Senate plenary, the support of all Republican committee members is required. Among the senators who expressed reservations about the appointment, according to the report, is Joni Ernst from Iowa.

Most of the reservations concern LaNeve's experience at the four-star general rank, in which he has served for only about half a year. According to the report, most officers appointed in the past to the position of Army Chief of Staff held this rank for at least 18 months before receiving the senior position.

The Pentagon continues to support LaNeve. Department of Defense spokesperson Sean Parnell stated that Hegset and the department stand behind his leadership as acting Army Chief of Staff, and that they will continue to work with the White House and the Senate to advance his candidacy.
