The discovery of an explosive drone on the grounds of Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany triggered a major security drama, leading to the diversion of flights and the deployment of a special robot to neutralize explosive devices. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt warns that the serious incident marks a "new level of danger" for the country, while law enforcement authorities are examining whether it was a planned and complex sabotage attempt managed directly by a foreign power.
According to a report in the British newspaper "The Guardian," the airport in Leipzig is not just a civilian facility, but serves as a critical logistics hub for NATO and the German military, and also acts as the European base of operations for the Ukrainian airline "Antonov."
The drone, which was equipped with explosives, was located in the cargo area near the southern runway, in the vicinity of Ukrainian planes. In a parallel drama that same morning, a cargo plane belonging to the company DHL, which was forced to abort its landing due to the runway closure, collided in the air with an unidentified object while climbing again. The plane managed to land safely in Hanover while suffering only minor damage.
Minister Dobrindt emphasized in his remarks that the findings on the ground are not characteristic of amateur work, and that investigators are treating the event as part of a "professional hybrid threat scenario." Although Berlin is refraining at this stage from officially blaming the Kremlin, the Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makeiev, has already pointed an accusing finger at Moscow.
"Who else could it be besides Russia?" wondered the Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makeiev.
At the same time, members of parliament in Germany made it clear that if it is proven that a foreign state is behind the operation, it is not just a localized terror event, but an act of state terrorism directed against the citizens of Germany.
Germany, defined as the largest supplier of military aid to Ukraine among European countries, has been suffering in recent months from waves of unauthorized drone incursions over infrastructure facilities, ports, and military bases. In the West, there is growing concern that this is a direct escalation by the Kremlin, intended to damage equipment destined for the front in Ukraine, disrupt NATO supply chains, and strike fear into Western nations.
