Hapoel Be'er Sheva Announces Agreement on Sale of Kings Kangwa to Panathinaikos
The player of the season is leaving Hapoel Be'er Sheva after two successful years. The club is set to receive 3.8 million euros, with the fee potentially rising to 4.5 million including bonuses. The midfielder will depart after the second leg against Vikingur.
Hapoel Be'er Sheva announced on Friday that an agreement has been reached for the sale of Kings Kangwa to the Greek club Panathinaikos. The Zambian midfielder, who was named player of last season, will play in the second leg of the Champions League qualifiers against Vikingur before flying to Greece for medical tests and to finalize his contract. The club is set to receive 3.8 million euros, though the package includes bonuses that could eventually raise the total fee to 4.5 million euros.
Kangwa had been close to a move to AEK Athens, but the Greek champions demanded that he sit out the match against Vikingur to avoid any eligibility issues for their own European campaign. AEK backed out of the deal after Kangwa participated in the match in Norway, but Panathinaikos quickly stepped in and finalized terms with both Be'er Sheva and the player.
27-year-old Kangwa leaves Be'er Sheva after two outstanding years. He recorded 29 goals and 19 assists in 83 appearances across all competitions, leading the team to victories in the State Cup, the league championship, and the Champion of Champions. Last season, he was officially named the "Player of the Season" in the Premier League.
Be'er Sheva management had anticipated the high demand for Kangwa and spent the summer scouting potential replacements to ensure they were prepared for his departure.
At Panathinaikos, Kangwa will aim to help the club secure its first championship title since the 2009/10 season.
