The record holder for Grand Slam tournament wins, Novak Djokovic, was eliminated tonight in the second round of the Cincinnati tournament after a surprising loss to Thiago Agustin Tirante from Argentina, ranked 50th in the world. The match, which was the Serbian's first since the Wimbledon semifinals, began with his control with a 6:2 victory in the first set. However, a sharp decline in his performance followed, and he lost the next two sets with a score of 6:4, 6:4.
Throughout the match, Djokovic appeared to be suffering from severe physical difficulty due to high heat and humidity. In the second set, after a long game that lasted about 18 minutes, he required a medical timeout as he struggled to breathe, suffered from nausea, and was seen with taping on his right shoulder. The Serbian shouted at his team asking for water and looked completely exhausted.
At the end of the match, Djokovic said that it is a chronic health problem that has accompanied him for the last two years and worsens especially in hot and humid weather. The 39-year-old tennis player did not specify the nature of the problem, but admitted that the pressure and nervousness during the match worsened his condition, and even expressed doubt regarding his return to the tournament in the future. On the other hand, the Argentine Tirante noted that this is the biggest victory of his career and complimented his opponent.
The early elimination in Cincinnati, a tournament he has won three times in the past, raises great concern among his fans ahead of the US Open which will open at the end of the month. Djokovic, who aims to win his 25th Grand Slam title, will now have to focus on physical recovery ahead of the tournament in New York.
