Traffic congestion in Israel has intensified significantly over the past two decades, according to new data released by the Central Bureau of Statistics for 2025. Total vehicle mileage reached 69.3 billion kilometers in 2025, marking a 2.6% increase compared to the previous year.

Over a 20-year span from 2005 to 2025, total annual mileage surged by 66%, while the number of registered vehicles more than doubled. In contrast, road surface area grew by only 31% and road length increased by 43%, directly driving up traffic density across the country. Private cars accounted for the vast majority of mileage in 2025 at 80.5%.

Interestingly, average mileage per individual vehicle slightly decreased by 0.6% compared to 2024, indicating that citizens are attempting to drive less. However, the sheer growth in total vehicle numbers has driven overall mileage and traffic jams upward.

Newer vehicles recorded the highest mileage in 2025, with cars under three years old averaging 16,700 kilometers. Electric vehicles also logged heavier usage, representing 4.9% of the vehicle fleet but 7% of total mileage. Taxis and leasing company fleets similarly showed disproportionately high road usage.
