As Israel prepares for the 26th Knesset elections scheduled for October 27, 2026, the Central Elections Committee is actively formulating contingency plans for various security scenarios, including a potential missile attack from Iran. A joint operations room involving the Elections Committee, the Israel Police, the Shin Bet, and the Home Front Command has been established to review all eventualities.

The guiding directive of the committee is to hold the elections on schedule, even during emergency conditions. Officials note that essential workplaces and commerce continued to operate under strict defense policies during previous missile attacks, meaning elections can similarly proceed with adjusted voting hours and specialized security measures.

Legal Grounds for Postponing Elections

Central Elections Committee Chairman and Supreme Court Deputy President Noam Solberg, alongside committee CEO Attorney Dean Livne, outlined the strict legal threshold required to delay a national vote. According to their directives, the sole justification is an emergency situation where free, equal, and accessible elections cannot physically take place.

Even in such a scenario, a postponement must be an absolute last resort, strictly limited in time, and justified by public facts. Under Basic Law provisions, delaying an election requires an extraordinary vote of 80 Knesset members in the plenary, demanding broad consensus across both the coalition and the opposition.

"A limited, supervised, and justified postponement may be justified, provided it is not exploited by the government to extend its term in office," Noam Solberg stated.

Voting Procedures and Shelters During Sirens

The committee has worked to position numerous polling stations inside protected spaces, while others have been placed adjacent to designated shelters. In the event of a rocket alert, polling station secretaries are authorized to secure ballots in designated bags and direct all present individuals to the nearest shelter.

Specialized regulations also empower the committee chairman, in consultation with IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, to issue emergency rules ensuring citizens can safely exercise their democratic rights without compromising immediate life-saving directives from the Home Front Command.
