Elon Musk is breaking his own records again: Tesla and SpaceX have announced a massive initial investment of $16.8 billion in the establishment of "TeraFab," an advanced chip factory in Texas. This is a huge project that, according to estimates, may eventually reach a total investment of about $119 billion over several stages, with the chip giant Intel also expected to take part in it.
The vision behind the ambitious venture is intended to meet the massive demand for computing power. At SpaceX, they explained that the move will be "epic in its mission and scale, with the goal of building new computing power at unprecedented scale and speed." The huge complex will span over nine million square meters, and Musk defined it as "the largest and most expensive structure on Earth by a significant margin." The factory is expected to provide employment for at least three thousand local workers.
The chips produced at the complex will be specifically adapted for Tesla's humanoid robots, autonomous taxis, and AI (artificial intelligence)-based data centers in space. The companies emphasized that the factory will operate to "bridge the gap between the existing global chip supply and the future demand for computing."
Alongside the excitement, the move is also accompanied by a storm surrounding the significant tax benefits granted to the project. On the other hand, the local education system welcomed it with enthusiasm. The director of the school district, Dr. Sarah Borowitz, stated:
"There are defining moments in the life of an educational district, and this is one of those moments. Our commitment is to ensure that every opportunity is managed wisely and transparently."
