Three years after the outbreak of the war in the Gaza Strip, the Israel Defense Forces continue their deep operations and defensive posture in the enclave. Lieutenant Colonel R., commander of the 9th Battalion in the 401st Armored Brigade, operates deep within the southern Strip, holding the Morag Corridor between Rafah and Khan Yunis. The brigade was among the first to enter Gaza at the start of the ground offensive and later participated in maneuvers in Lebanon.

Maintaining the Defense Line

The 9th Battalion's combat team, comprising tanks, reserve infantry, engineering, and administrative support, secures the yellow line to protect southern border communities. Captain A., a company commander in the battalion who was previously wounded by RPG shrapnel, emphasizes the tangible impact of their presence on returning residents. Despite the devastation of nearby areas and the complete destruction of infrastructure in the immediate corridor, troops actively patrol the area, dismantle remaining tunnels, and prepare their positions for the winter months.

Remembering the Fallen and Connecting with Communities

Battalion leadership and soldiers maintain close ties with agricultural communities near the border, often volunteering in local fields before heading home on leave. Both R. and A. reflect on the heavy toll of the conflict, recalling commanders such as Colonel Ehsan Daksa and Lieutenant Colonel Dor Ben Simhon, who fell in combat. Emphasizing front-line leadership, the commanders note that staying close to the troops during friction points reinforces their sense of duty and shared responsibility for the nation's future.
