Haim Etgar with a dramatic warning: "Your money is at risk"

Haim Etgar, a reporter and presenter for Channel 12, published a new video on the social network TikTok, warning users about a new scam affecting mobile devices after connecting to Wi-Fi in public places abroad.

"They may ask you, as we are being reported, to download software. They tell you that in order to use the Wi-Fi, you need to click on a link and download software. To do something active that will download malicious software to your device. From this software, the scammers can do whatever they want with your data. Cause you damage that you cannot even imagine," Etgar told the users.

Later in the video, the journalist addressed the viewers and noted that one should be careful when connecting to Wi-Fi in public places abroad and avoid installing third-party software on a mobile device. "Check very carefully that it is indeed the Wi-Fi of the place. Second, do not download any software. Do not download anything that could harm your device. Your money is at risk."

Last week, the Tax Authority announced that a report had been received regarding a scam attempt in which emails are sent to many citizens while impersonating the government body. The messages present a false claim regarding the opening of an investigation into tax offenses and include links aimed at obtaining personal information, including access details to systems and files. "The Tax Authority emphasizes that it has no connection to these messages, and draws the public's attention to avoid opening suspicious links or providing personal details such as passwords, identification numbers, etc.," the official statement read.
