Guendouzi sparks major commotion: confrontation between Fenerbahçe and Lyon players
The French midfielder gave the middle finger to Lyon fans after the Turkish team's victory, a brawl broke out in the tunnel and a French staff member was injured. Openda: "We must avoid such things."
Lyon's elimination from the Champions League ended this Wednesday in a major commotion. After the 2:1 loss to Fenerbahçe in the playoff second leg, Matteo Guendouzi celebrated demonstratively in front of the home fans, taunting them, and subsequently, a brawl broke out between the staff and players of both teams.
The 27-year-old French midfielder, who previously played for Marseille and was documented before the match giving the middle finger to Lyon fans, continued his provocations even after the final whistle. Guendouzi shouted "Allez l'OM!" and even performed with his hands the gesture associated with the French rapper Jul, a Marseille native. The tension on the pitch rose quickly, and players from both teams confronted each other before the sides were separated.
However, the event did not end there: shortly after, a gathering formed in the tunnel area, and according to Canal+, one of Lyon's staff members was even injured during the commotion. Lyon striker Loïs Openda addressed the events afterwards and told Canal+:
"It was a bit of a moment of euphoria, everyone got carried away because of small things. But now it's over and we are leaving it behind. It's not something we want to see. In the world of football, we must avoid such things, for the sake of all the people who watch us."
