Bnei Herzliya Ready for Porto Clash in Basketball Champions League
Following its historic opening victory in the domestic league, Bnei Herzliya is set to host FC Porto from Portugal on Wednesday at 19:30 in Samokov, Bulgaria. The match marks the second round of the FIBA Basketball Champions League group stage. This will be Herzliya's second appearance at the Samokov arena, after Tofaş Bursa hosted them there last season and secured a 90:86 win.
Targeting the Play-in Stage
At the start of the season, the club highlighted the play-in stage as a major objective. Following a defeat in the opening round against Joventut Badalona, the team understands that a home win against Porto is crucial to establishing an advantage in the battle for second and third place in the group.
"We set a goal this season to be competitive in Europe as well," said head coach Yehu Orland ahead of the match. "The game against Porto is key for us to advance to the next stage. Portuguese basketball has developed in recent years, and Porto built a very high-quality team this summer."
Squad Composition and Historical Context
Aside from six foreign players, Herzliya features two naturalized players: Dusty Hannahs and Lucas Goldberg. Due to competition rules permitting up to seven non-locally trained players, Herzliya will need to leave one foreign or naturalized player out of the matchday squad.
Guard Amit Gershon added: "We are arriving with a lot of motivation and want to continue the momentum from our league win over Ness Ziona. The game has immense importance for our European campaign, and we will do our best to return home with a victory."
For Porto, this season marks their debut in the BCL after winning the Portuguese championship last year for the first time in a decade. The teams previously met nine seasons ago in the FIBA Europe Cup qualifiers, where Herzliya advanced despite a narrow aggregate battle.
