Google Unveils Its First Tracking Tag: Pixel Tag

Long after the launch of the Apple AirTag and the subsequent market entry of competitors like Samsung and Tile, Google has finally joined the segment by announcing its first official tracking device: the Pixel Tag.

Precision Tracking

The new elliptical tag features a gray metal finish, which Google refers to as "Fog." The device is compact and lightweight, weighing only 12 grams. Internally, Google has integrated support for the Ultra-Wideband (UWB) standard alongside Bluetooth 6.0 Channel Sounding technology. This combination enables highly precise tracking, where arrows on the smartphone screen guide the user directly to the item, displaying the exact distance in centimeters. Note that full UWB precision requires a compatible smartphone, such as the new Pixel 11 devices or Samsung Galaxy flagships.

The Pixel Tag connects to the Android Find Hub network, leveraging a massive global network of billions of devices to locate items even at great distances. A physical button on the tag allows for two-way searching: pressing it triggers a ring on the connected smartphone. Google has also integrated Gemini support, enabling users to locate the tag via simple voice commands. The device is IP67 rated for water and dust resistance and utilizes a standard replaceable CR2032 coin battery, which the company claims will last for over a year.

Similar to Apple's design, Google has opted against including a built-in hole for keychains or luggage attachment, requiring users to purchase a separate cover. Regarding privacy and security, the company has implemented automatic alerts that notify users directly on their mobile devices if an unknown Pixel Tag is moving with them, a measure designed to prevent stalking.

The Pixel Tag is priced at $29 per unit or $99 for a four-pack. It will be available for purchase starting this November.
