Google Tightens RAM Usage Requirements for Android Apps
Google is introducing strict new RAM consumption limits for Android applications. Starting February 2027, developers who fail to optimize their apps will face penalties, including lower search rankings.
We are in the midst of a RAM crisis. Gadget prices are rising, and smartphone manufacturers are launching new models with less RAM, including flagship devices like the Pixel 11 Pro. Consequently, Google has notified developers: it is time to start saving on RAM usage, or face the consequences.
A new threshold for RAM usage
Google announced new initiatives in its developer blog aimed at smarter RAM management for Android applications. New metrics will be based on the last 28 days of usage, measured by the 90th percentile. This means that for 90% of users, memory consumption must not exceed the new threshold. For instance, on devices with 4GB of RAM, an app cannot exceed 2GB of active memory or 1GB in the background. For 16GB devices, these limits are set at 4.25GB and 2GB, respectively. Additionally, Google requires a minimum 25% reduction in DEX file size using optimization and compression tools.
To assist developers, Google is providing new mechanisms. Dynamic memory usage in the Play Console will allow tracking of memory consumption, accounting for different device types. The second tool, Bitmap memory usage, will estimate memory allocated to bitmaps, which Google now requires developers to release when an app moves to the background.
Impact on developers
These requirements apply to games over 50MB and apps over 10MB, effective February 2027. From that date, Google will take action against non-compliant apps, punishing them with lower search rankings and restrictions on new updates.
