Generation Z Protests Sweep Europe Amid Cost-Of-Living Crisis
A wave of Generation Z protests is sweeping Europe, driven by soaring living costs, housing crises, and educational deficiencies. Governments in France, Spain, Italy, and Germany are struggling to contain widespread civil unrest through temporary concessions and security measures.

A wave of youth-led protests and civil unrest has swept across several European nations, driven by Generation Z students demanding systemic reforms amid soaring living costs, housing shortages, and deteriorating public services. Originally sparked in France over poor educational conditions, the demonstrations have rapidly expanded into a continent-wide movement challenging government policies, inflation, and political corruption.
In France, demonstrations have brought hundreds of thousands of protesters into the streets, peaking at an estimated 575,000 participants. Protests across Paris, Lyon, Marseille, and Bordeaux have targeted high fuel prices, inflation, and inadequate public infrastructure, with demands including a 10% minimum wage hike and 250,000 new university slots. President Emmanuel Macron has acknowledged the legitimacy of the grievances, while Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has instructed technical agencies to address student demands. The government also announced fuel subsidies for low-income workers and farmers ahead of the 2027 presidential elections.
Spain has faced intense social friction following protests that began in late September over housing eviction crises. Skyrocketing rental costs in Madrid and Barcelona have triggered widespread outrage. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez attempted to pass emergency decrees freezing evictions through 2030 and regulating rent prices, but opposition parties defeated the legislation in parliament. Following the dismantlement of a protest camp in Madrid, Sánchez dissolved parliament and called early general elections for November 29.
In Italy, student demonstrations against deteriorating school conditions escalated into nationwide clashes over food and electricity prices, stagnant wages, and high rents. Widespread looting in Milan prompted the deployment of military forces and the enactment of emergency legislation increasing penalties for demonstrators. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's government approved tax credits for truckers, farmers, and fishermen, alongside a proposed annual bonus for workers under 30.
Germany has witnessed youth-led mobilizations triggered by debates over the reintroduction of military service models, alongside broader demands concerning educational reforms, living costs, housing prices, and climate policy. Following nationwide protests on October 31, Education Minister Karin Prien acknowledged the validity of youth concerns, while the Ministry of Interior announced stricter penalties for rioters as youth groups prepare for further international strikes.
