Escalation Between Ukraine and Iran: 'Under Siege from South and North'
Tehran is intensifying its rhetoric against Ukraine following strikes on logistics routes in the Caspian Sea. Iranian officials are threatening retaliation, while Kyiv asserts its intent to disrupt the supply of Iranian weapons to Russia.
Senior officials in Iran, including the chairman of the National Security Committee, are threatening a harsh response against Ukraine. Although Ukraine remains within range of Iranian missiles, Kyiv has signaled that further operations against the supply routes connecting Moscow and Tehran are possible.
Tensions between the two nations have escalated following Ukrainian strikes in the Caspian Sea. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that the attacks targeted vessels transporting military cargo and UAV components, as well as a warship. The Ambassador of Ukraine to Israel, Yevhen Korniychuk, told N12 that the targeted ship was carrying critical components for drone and missile production.
Analysts note that the Caspian Sea has become a strategic route for bypassing sanctions. For Iran, it serves as the most direct path for transferring military aid to Russia, largely shielded from US and allied naval intervention. According to researcher Hamid-Reza Azizi, Tehran views these developments as part of a broader scenario where it is "under siege from both the south and the north."
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi blamed Kyiv for the death of a sailor and vowed retaliation. Conversely, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha rejected the claims, labeling them as lies. "The regime in Tehran is a direct partner in Russian aggression, and it has no right to pretend to be a victim," Sybiha stated.
