A man in West Bengal, India, was arrested for allegedly murdering his wife and father during Durga Puja, sparking panic as he roamed the village with a knife.
An Indian man in West Bengal has been arrested on suspicion of murdering his wife and father during the Durga Puja celebrations, before roaming his village armed with a knife and sparking widespread panic. According to local reports, the suspect, Mangal Choudhury, allegedly decapitated his wife and placed her severed head near a shrine dedicated to the goddess Kali.
Police Investigation Into Ritualistic Angles
Local law enforcement has launched an inquiry into the double homicide, examining whether the gruesome acts were linked to superstitious beliefs or the influence of a local practitioner of tantric rituals. Neighbors reported that a mystic or tantric practitioner had frequently visited the family's home in the period leading up to the tragedy.
The incident took place on Monday night during Durga Ashtami near the Damodar River in Bankura district. The victims were identified as 39-year-old Rumpa Choudhury, the suspect's wife, and his elderly father, Rajendra Choudhury. Investigators confirmed that sharp-edged weapons were used in both killings.
Panic in the Village and Arrest
Following the murders, Mangal reportedly stepped out of his home holding a knife, terrifying local residents as he chased several people through the streets. He allegedly attempted to attack his brother, who managed to escape unharmed before police arrived at the scene.
"The suspect caused immense panic in the village, making it difficult for officers to immediately secure the area," a local police spokesperson stated regarding the chaotic operation.
Police eventually managed to overpower and arrest the suspect. Authorities are currently awaiting forensic test results to determine the exact motive behind the killings and whether outside ritualistic influence played a decisive role in the crime.
