Ohio Governor's Race Erupts in Family and Political Scandal Over Viral Video
A bitter family dispute erupts in the Ohio governor's race as an estranged mother attacks Democratic candidate Dr. Amy Acton in a viral video, drawing bipartisan condemnation.

The race for the governor of Ohio has been engulfed in a fierce family and political controversy just weeks before the midterms, as a viral video surfaced featuring the estranged mother of Democratic candidate Dr. Amy Acton attacking her daughter. In the footage, Donna Arthur accuses Acton of lying about her past, urging voters to reject her candidacy.
Family Trauma Explodes into Campaign Politics
Acton, a 60-year-old Jewish physician who previously served as Ohio’s health director during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, is facing businessman Vivek Ramaswamy. The clash escalated when the one-minute video appeared online, showing Arthur denying her daughter's past accounts of homelessness and hardship.
However, court documents and family history reveal a decades-long estrangement rooted in severe childhood abuse. Acton previously disclosed that she suffered neglect, poverty, and sexual abuse by her stepfather, who was charged with raping her when she was 12 years old. Her brother, Philip Sterns, released a scathing statement defending her and accusing Ramaswamy's camp of weaponizing her trauma.
Our biological mother stayed married to Amy's rapist until he died, Sterns stated, calling the political attack a desperate and despicable low.
Fallout and Bipartisan Condemnation
Acton confirmed that the woman in the video is indeed her mother, noting they had not spoken since she was a child. While Ramaswamy's campaign denied direct knowledge of the video's production, spokeswoman Connie Lack doubled down on attacks regarding Acton's credibility.
The controversy drew swift bipartisan backlash. Prominent conservative figures, including Meghan McCain, condemned the ad, while Democratic lawmakers labeled it one of the most disgraceful tactics seen in modern politics. Despite the turmoil, a recent Marist poll showed Acton leading Ramaswamy 50% to 43%.
