Investigation in Kenya: At least 14 elephants died under mysterious circumstances

The Kenya Wildlife Service is investigating the mysterious death of at least 14 elephants in the south of the country. Experts are currently determining whether the animals died as a result of disease, poisoning, or other factors. Tissue samples from the carcasses have been sent to laboratories to identify the cause of death.
The carcasses were discovered in various locations at a distance of 15 to 30 kilometers from the borders of Amboseli National Park. According to data from the Amboseli Elephant Trust, there were more than 2,000 elephants in the ecosystem as of 2025.
At present, there is no evidence pointing to a single cause of death. The organization noted that the casualties include elephants of different ages and both sexes, suggesting that the deaths are not limited to one family or a specific demographic group.
Unusual event in the reserve area
The park and its surroundings, which extend along the border with Tanzania, are renowned for their wildlife. Officials noted that this is the first time in decades that elephant deaths of this scale have been documented in the area, where authorities have successfully eradicated illegal hunting.
"The bodies were found in various locations surrounding the national park," Duncan Wunyama, head of the communications department of the Wildlife Service, told local media.
