Built an AI agent for WhatsApp for a family vacation in Thailand: "It upgraded our trip"

Keren Dallal, 38, flew with an extended family group for a three-week trip to Thailand. To the family WhatsApp group, she added an AI agent she named Shmulik, who became the trip's logistics manager. She built the agent using Base44's Superagent, feeding it the trip's schedule, family composition, and ages, while also tasking it with calculating expense distribution among participants.

"It really upgraded the trip for me, I tell everyone with enthusiasm," Dallal tells mako. In a LinkedIn post, she wrote: "This is a mission post for anyone who loves their family but also wants to return with them on the same plane after the August vacation." Dallal traveled with her husband, children, a nanny, her parents, and her sister's family.

How Shmulik Works

After uploading the trip plan and setting the agent's persona as a Thailand tour guide, Dallal integrated it into the family group. "My father asks it all the time: how many days are left, when is the return flight, what is the name of the next hotel? It answers in the group, which saves my sister from being bothered," she says.

Beyond scheduling, Shmulik helps the family make decisions. It understands voice messages, is connected to the internet, and can search for relevant information. For instance, when the family wanted a massage, the agent checked guest reviews for their hotel and suggested a cheaper, highly-rated spot just 50 meters away on the beach.

Managing Expenses

Shmulik also handles finances. Users can photograph a receipt, and the agent calculates who owes what, syncing the data to Google Sheets. For Dallal, the key is accessibility: "Everyone builds something easily in Claude, sends a link, and then no one uses it. Being in WhatsApp makes it much more accessible."

From Product Manager to CEO

Dallal is the CEO of the startup trellia.io, which develops agents for WhatsApp communities. Her journey into entrepreneurship began with creating AI tools for parent committees and family trips. A volunteer project she built for the Hoffman Kauffman alumni community gained such momentum that it was adopted by the Zell program at Reichman University and Monday.
