Drones illuminated the New York City skyline on Friday ahead of the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, as part of a display organized by the city's arts foundation.
At the peak of the display, the drones recreated the Twin Towers, featuring 2,977 points of light—one for each victim killed in the attacks—against the night sky over lower Manhattan. The lights merged to reconstruct the full architectural scale of the towers as they stood in 2001.
The event took place over the harbor alongside the traditional 'Tribute in Light' installation. Small aircraft were grounded for hours during the performance, which preceded the annual ceremony at Ground Zero marking the anniversary with a seventh moment of silence for those who died from related illnesses.
