Two Premier League teams are close to breaking the all-time record
Aston Villa sold players for 353 million euros this summer - just below the record set by Monaco in 2018/19. Manchester City is also still in the race.
Premier League teams are usually associated with their huge spending in the transfer window, but this summer three of them stand out on the other side of the equation. Aston Villa, Manchester City, and Newcastle have already entered the top six of all time in revenue from selling players in one window - and the record of Monaco, which brought in 360 million euros in the 2018/19 season, is now within reach.
Aston Villa became the leading candidate to break the record yesterday, Wednesday, after agreeing to the sale of Ollie Watkins to Al-Hilal for 60 million euros. Unai Emery's team sold players for a total of 353.1 million euros - only 6.9 million less than Monaco's historical record. A large part of the revenue came, of course, from the transfer of Morgan Rogers to Chelsea for 138 million euros, while Ezri Konsa, Youri Tielemans, and Lucas Digne were among the other departures.
Manchester City is also deep in the fight for the record. After the sale of Nico Gonzalez to Newcastle, it brought in 333.5 million euros - 26.5 million euros from the record, after also parting ways with Savinho, Tijjani Reijnders, Rodri, James Trafford, Manuel Akanji, and Nathan Ake. City has spent 273.7 million euros so far, including the acquisition of Ayoub Bouaddi and Elliot Anderson, so it is currently at a plus of about 59.8 million euros in the window. Jack Grealish may still leave before the window closes, so it can also threaten the record. Omar Marmoush is expected to move to Tottenham on loan with an obligation to buy, however, the amount for him will be included in City's revenue only next season.
Newcastle, which brought in 275.5 million euros from the sale of Sandro Tonali to Tottenham, Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal, and Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, invested part of the amount back into the squad - and among other things, purchased Nico Gonzalez from City. The record that the English teams are trying to break belongs, as mentioned, to Monaco, which brought in 360 million euros in the 2018/19 window, among other things thanks to the sale of Kylian Mbappe to Paris Saint-Germain for 180 million euros, Thomas Lemar to Atletico Madrid for 72 million, and Fabinho to Liverpool for 45 million.
