Scientists to Use Sharks for Hurricane Forecasting
Researchers from the University of Delaware are equipping sharks with sensors to measure ocean temperature, depth, and salinity. The project aims to gather data that will improve hurricane intensity forecasts before they reach the US coast.

For years, sharks have been portrayed in popular culture as fearsome predators. Now, researchers in the US are harnessing them for a purpose that could help protect human lives: improving hurricane forecasts.
Researchers from the University of Delaware are equipping sharks with tiny sensors, effectively turning them into mobile ocean monitoring stations. The devices collect data on water temperature, depth, and salinity, transmitting it to satellites whenever the sharks surface. This information is then integrated into weather and climate prediction models.
Sharks are uniquely suited for this task due to their migratory patterns. They cover vast distances and access remote areas where traditional monitoring equipment cannot be deployed.
The research focuses primarily on water temperature within the "mixed layer." This data is crucial for assessing hurricane intensity, as warmer water in this layer provides the storm with more energy, potentially leading to rapid intensification.
Selected species for the study include shortfin mako, blue sharks, smooth hammerhead sharks, and young white sharks—all of which surface frequently enough to ensure consistent satellite data transmission.
Sensors are attached to the shark's dorsal fin. The attachment process is rapid, typically taking less than five minutes, and is conducted under strict supervision to minimize animal stress. The sensors are secured with materials designed to degrade and detach over time.
If successful, the real-time data collected by these sharks could significantly improve the ability to predict hurricane strengthening before they hit the US East Coast. More accurate forecasts would provide residents and authorities with critical lead time to prepare for storms and mitigate damage.
Beyond the scientific benefits, researchers emphasize that the study may reshape public perception of sharks, transforming them from creatures to be feared into essential partners in understanding our oceans and the storms that form above them.
