Mexican drug cartels have established giant methamphetamine production laboratories in the forests of Nigeria
The Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation drug cartels have deepened their grip on Africa. Drug production in the west of the continent allows easy access to smuggling routes to Europe and Asia. Nigeria announced that it carried out the largest drug seizure in its history.
Authorities in Nigeria have uncovered a network of giant methamphetamine production laboratories operated by Mexican drug cartels. During the raid, more than two tons of the drug were seized, with an estimated value of 360 million dollars. Three Mexican citizens and seven Nigerians were arrested on suspicion of operating the laboratory in the heart of the forest.
A federal court was temporarily moved inside the drug lab to examine the evidence. According to law enforcement officials, the laboratories are linked to the Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation cartels. Since 2023, 14 drug laboratories operated by Mexican citizens have been uncovered in Africa. Nigerian authorities are warning of an unusual and exceptional phenomenon: the expansion of Mexican drug cartel activities on the African continent.
The giant laboratories were recently uncovered in isolated areas, about a two-hour drive from the city of Lagos. These findings reflect a trend of shifting the production of synthetic drugs from Central America to West Africa. The BBC reported that during raids carried out by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, more than two tons of the drug were seized, marking the largest such case in the country's history.
In one instance, a federal court was temporarily moved inside a suspected drug laboratory. The judge and judicial representatives held an official hearing on-site to assess the scale of the activity and the chemical evidence. Ten detainees were presented at the site, including three Mexican citizens, handcuffed next to giant drums and advanced distillation equipment. "We managed to prove that Nigeria will not be a safe haven for them," said a spokesperson for the Nigerian drug enforcement agency.
According to law enforcement, the Mexicans have perfected the production process over decades to achieve exceptionally high purity. The shift to production in Africa allows the cartels to utilize vast forest areas to hide their activities. Unlike plant-based drugs, methamphetamine is a synthetic substance that can be produced anywhere there are suitable chemical precursors and professional expertise.
Nigeria's geographical location facilitates the smuggling of products to profitable markets in Europe and Asia via the Atlantic Ocean. James Grego, head of counter-narcotics operations for the United States Africa Command, noted that since 2023, 14 laboratories have been uncovered on the continent. According to him, the pressure exerted by President Donald Trump in Latin America since his return to the White House in 2025 has pushed these organizations to seek new production centers.
According to data from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, methamphetamine use in Europe has increased by 47% over the last decade. Nigerian authorities intend to continue and increase oversight and intelligence to eradicate the phenomenon, despite challenges posed by porous borders and weak oversight of chemical imports in West Africa.
