Under Alaska's election system, all candidates run in a single primary, with the top four advancing to the general election. Sullivan, a candidate with no political background, finished third with 2.4%, sparking immediate controversy.

The incumbent senator's campaign claims that Dan J. Sullivan is a "plant" designed to confuse voters and siphon off votes from the Republican nominee. Dan J. Sullivan, a 70-year-old retired teacher, denies these allegations. An attempt by Senator Sullivan and the Republican Party to have him removed from the ballot via the Alaska Supreme Court was unsuccessful.

The drama deepened when Dan A. Sullivan, a former mayor of Anchorage, publicly endorsed the incumbent, calling him the "original" Dan Sullivan and praising his work for the state.
