The Czech Republic is preparing to acquire four additional Spyder All-in-One air defense systems produced by Israel's Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, Czech Defense Minister Jiri Cernoch announced during a parliamentary security committee meeting in Prague.

The upcoming procurement represents a significant expansion of bilateral defense cooperation. In 2021, Prague signed a government-to-government agreement brokered by the Israeli Ministry of Defense to purchase four standard Spyder batteries for approximately 2 billion shekels, alongside IAI's MMR radars. The first two batteries have already been delivered to the Czech Republic, and the manufacturing of all four has been completed.

Changing Strategic Needs

According to defense officials, Czech operational requirements have evolved, prompting Prague to transition from point-defense capabilities toward a broader national air defense architecture. As part of this expansion, Rafael is expected to lead the development of a unified national command and control system integrating the country's entire air defense network.

The Spyder system is designed to neutralize diverse aerial threats, including drones, aircraft, helicopters, and short-range ballistic missiles, utilizing Rafael's Python and Derby interceptors. A key advantage for export is that the system operates independently of US components, bypassing the need for Washington's export approval—unlike systems such as David's Sling or Arrow 3.

The All-in-One configuration integrates an entire air defense suite—featuring an integral radar, electro-optical payload, advanced command and control, and interceptors—onto a single vehicle. While initially procured for point defense and maneuver forces, the evolving strategic requirements in Prague have driven the expansion toward a comprehensive national defense array.
