Fear of Iranian revenge: Changes in Benjamin Netanyahu's trip to meet Donald Trump
Amid security tensions, the Prime Minister departed from Nevatim Airbase rather than Ben Gurion Airport. Before takeoff, Benjamin Netanyahu stated: "I will discuss all issues on the agenda, first and foremost Iran."
Against the backdrop of tensions with Iran and security concerns, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu departed today, Monday, for Washington on the "Knaf Zion" aircraft. The departure was conducted secretly and without official statements from Nevatim Airbase rather than Ben Gurion Airport, with the timing kept confidential and journalists excluded from the delegation.
This departure from the usual format comes amid Iranian threats to avenge the elimination of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. It also follows an incident on July 8, when US President Donald Trump switched his aircraft and flew from Turkey to London on the older "Air Force One" plane. According to reports, this was due to intelligence provided by Israel regarding an Iranian assassination plot, and the fact that the new presidential plane lacks certain defense systems against such threats.
"Expand the circle of peace"
Before his departure for Washington, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated:
"I will discuss with President Donald Trump all the issues on the agenda, and first and foremost Iran. Our goal is to maintain our security and also to expand the circle of peace around us."
Netanyahu further added:
"I am on my way to Washington for a meeting with our friend, President Donald Trump. This is my eighth meeting with him since his election to a second term, more than with any other international leader. It is a great privilege but also a great responsibility. From my experience as Prime Minister, one must act in these complex times with both great determination and great wisdom. We will discuss all issues on the agenda, and first and foremost Iran. Of course, our goal is to maintain our security and also to expand the circle of peace around us."
The Prime Minister concluded:
"I am embarking on this mission with one clear goal: to ensure the security, strength, and future of our dear State of Israel. I am also embarking on another goal: to pay final respects to our friend, a true friend of mine and of the State of Israel — Lindsey Graham, one of the greatest friends of the State of Israel of all time. I am sure that in this matter, I represent you as well, the citizens of Israel."
