Historic changes to Jerusalem's light rail after 15 years
Great news for Jerusalem: Starting today, the light rail is implementing significant operational changes. The extended service will be in effect primarily on weekends, during the days of Selichot, and during the intermediate days of Sukkot.
Great news for Jerusalem residents and visitors to the capital: Starting today, Thursday, August 13, the light rail is expanding its operating hours and will run continuously until 02:00 AM on selected dates. The extended service will operate primarily on Thursdays, Saturday nights, during the days of Selichot, and during the intermediate days of Sukkot.
The first section of the Jerusalem light rail (the Red Line) began public service on August 19, 2011, and reached its full format on February 27, 2025, with the extension to Neve Yaakov and Hadassah Ein Kerem.
As a reminder, parking rates in Jerusalem's city center increased on August 11. The update to parking fees in municipal lots, initiated by the Jerusalem Municipality and the "Eden" company, is intended to alleviate heavy traffic congestion in the heart of the city and incentivize the public to switch to public transport, primarily the light rail.
These changes will not affect Jerusalem residents holding the "Jerusalemite" benefit, for whom the discounted rate of 11 shekels per hour will be maintained at all municipal parking lots.
