Professor Rafi Carasso Warns Against Hair Straightening Dangers

Renowned neurologist and health broadcaster Professor Rafi Carasso has issued a stark warning regarding the severe health hazards associated with chemical hair-straightening treatments. In a video shared on his Instagram account, Carasso highlighted that these popular cosmetic procedures can lead to acute kidney failure, cancer, and severe scalp damage.

"Acute kidney failure is a very serious disease that can be fatal," Professor Carasso stated. "Every year, dozens of young women and girls arrive with kidney failure after undergoing hair straightening. These treatments are mainly performed using chemical substances like glyoxylic acid, which is absorbed through the scalp, enters the bloodstream, forms crystals that clog the kidneys, and causes renal failure."

Symptoms and Medical Risks

The medical expert detailed the warning signs that typically follow hazardous chemical hair treatments. Symptoms often begin with mild to severe abdominal pain, accompanied by nausea, vomiting, extreme fatigue, weakness, and changes in urination patterns. In severe cases, patients require emergency dialysis.

Carasso strongly advised consumers to verify that any products used in salons carry official approvals from the Ministry of Health, emphasizing that glyoxylic acid is exceptionally dangerous and should be avoided.

Recent Incidents in Israeli Hospitals

This warning follows a recent case where a 16-year-old girl from Tel Aviv was hospitalized at the Wolfson Medical Center with acute kidney failure. The teenager sought emergency medical care after experiencing severe fatigue, nausea, and abdominal pain shortly after receiving a hair-straightening treatment at a home-based salon. Medical personnel conducted a series of tests, diagnosed her with kidney failure, and stabilized her condition.
