Energy giant BP has crushed analyst expectations by posting its highest quarterly profit in five years, driven by the conflict in Iran that sent prices and refining margins soaring. The British company reported a replacement cost profit—used as an alternative measure for net income—of $8.5 billion.

This figure significantly exceeded the average analyst forecast of $6.1 billion, representing a nearly fourfold surge compared to $2.2 billion in the same period last year. The replacement cost profit neutralizes the impact of inventory price volatility, reflecting the cost of raw materials at current market prices. Operating cash flow reached $28.55 billion in the first nine months of the year, up from $16.89 billion a year earlier, while net debt dropped to $13.87 billion from $26.05 billion.

BP announced it will use a portion of its surplus cash to clear its remaining liabilities stemming from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, which claimed the lives of 11 rig workers. According to the company, outstanding payments for the disaster stood at $5.94 billion.

"This is a dynamic period where volatility and trading disruptions continue to characterize global energy markets."
