Why does a phone continue to drain while off?
Turning off a smartphone does not completely stop power consumption. There are two main reasons for this:

Does airplane mode really speed up charging?
The short answer is yes. Airplane mode disables cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connections, preventing the phone from wasting energy on constant signal searching. However, tests show that the time saved is only 4 to 11 minutes. Given that you lose the ability to receive essential calls and messages, this may not be worth it. A better alternative is using 'Do Not Disturb' or 'Focus' modes, which put apps into standby without disconnecting you from the world.
