After murder charge dropped: suspects in Eldar Dayan case released to house arrest
Following the announcement that the circumstances of death could not be determined, the police appealed to the court to release all suspects to two weeks of house arrest. The judge rejected the request and ordered the five young men involved in the fight to be released for only 4 days.
The police requested today, Monday, from the Petah Tikva Magistrate's Court to release to house arrest for two weeks those involved in the case of Eldar Dayan's death: Omri Peretz and Maxim Barberman, two of Dayan's friends, and the five young men who were involved in the fight before his death.
In the hearing for the five young men, Judge Ronen Peleg rejected the police's request and ordered house arrest for 4 days. The hearing regarding the two friends will begin shortly.
The decision to release them came after the Institute of Forensic Medicine announced yesterday that it was impossible to determine the cause of Dayan's death due to the condition of the body. The body had been lying in the field for about three weeks and was damaged due to the summer heat and the impact of wild animals.
Peretz and Barberman had been in custody for almost 30 days. Initially, they were arrested on suspicion of being involved in a fight, and after his body was found, they became suspects in his murder. Attorney Chen Siboni, who represents Peretz, stated:
"I am happy that we have reached this moment where the investigative unit took responsibility and decided to release my client. It is very, very unfortunate that we have already passed a long time until the release and they have been in custody for almost 30 days. As we claimed from the beginning, my client has no connection to this event. Even if there was a cause of death, the only people who need to do some soul-searching and look for where he was and what happened to him is the police unit, which had his location from the very first days."
Attorney Koral Siboni, who represents Barberman, stated:
"After 30 days of investigation, it turned out that there is no evidentiary basis linking the suspect Maxim to the murder incident. It is important to remember that at the center of this event stands the death of Eldar, and we ask to send condolences to the family, and of course the truth must come to light, that is everything."
